On his third day in New Hampshire, Huntsman traveled to Hooksett, about 10 miles up the country roads from Manchester, to pose for photographs at Riley’s gun shop. The photo op, like cheap designer handbags , demanded a level of stagecraft — pretending to be really interested in things while people take pictures of you being really interested in them — that made me cringe for Huntsman. Stagecraft isn’t really his thing.
“Hey, guys,” Huntsman asked a couple of young, expressionless salesmen, “what are you selling?”
“Guns,” one salesman said. His name was Brett.
“What are you selling the most of designer handbags on sale ?” Huntsman persevered.
“Uh, that all depends on what people are looking for,” Brett replied. And so on.
“This is the third one since I’ve been here,” Brett told me later, referring to presidential candidates, “and I’ve only been here for two months. I’m not sure of their names.”
After a quick stop for more photos at designer handbags wholesale , as we drove past meadows and railroad tracks, I asked Huntsman how he thought he was going to gain traction without sharing some of the anger that Republicans felt toward his old boss. “People are going to vote not on personalities — they’re going to vote on issues,” Huntsman replied confidently. He told me that he resisted similar attacks when he ran for governor against a Democrat, Scott Matheson Jr., in 2004. “I had people around me who said, ‘You’re going to get cheap designer bags if you don’t take him down,’ ” Huntsman said in his low, quiet voice. “I fired a couple of them. That’s not the way I operate.”
